My friend Audrey (art teacher at the school where I've been working for the last 3 years) took some newborn pictures of Laurel on March 17. They are GREAT! I used them when I designed Laurel's birth announcement and I plan to do a collage of them in her nursery (once she has a nursery :). Here are some of my favorites from the photo shoot...

Newborn Photo Shoot
Both of my shoulders have been puked on this morning, and it's not even 9am! That is neither here nor there. :)

Here's a look over Laurel's life so far...
I am leaving out approximately 1000 pictures of so many fun and exciting things...visitors, cute expressions Laurel's made, trips and so much more!...she has had a busy month!!

I feel a LITTLE bad...but only a little.
Psst-- can you keep a secret?
Yesterday was Snow Day #5 for me. Yes, FIVE days out of the last nine were "bad weather" days where I live. I work at a school, and even though I am not a District employee, I still got to stay home on each and every one of the days the school was closed.
It was glorious, really. Especially yesterday. Jeremy and I were both off, and our day was the perfect mix of productivity and relaxation...like a Saturday smack-dab in the middle of the week. Perfection.
But the thing about it is that the kids and the teachers at my school are frustrated about all these snow days. The talk is all about when we'll make up the days and if any of them can be forgiven by the state, since only two bad weather days are built in to the District calendar. People are annoyed that their plans are thrown off and we'll be halfway into June and still in school, if things continue at this rate.
But here's the secret: with my organization, we have to work through the summers anyway; we don't get to be off just because school is out. We run summer programs and camps or we assist with summer school (yawn) if absolutely necessary. So for someone like me, a contract employee with the District, these five days were F-R-E-E. Without cost. I got paid for each any every one and did not have to use a solitary sick or personal day!
But wait! There's more to the secret. :)
This is my "final month" of pregnancy, so I just got an extra week of what can basically be called "vacation" when I am physically at my largest and most-tired. THANK YOU, LORD!! Seriously, it feels like a gift from Heaven sent just for me, all this so-called bad weather.
So I feel a LITTLE bad for the students having to make up their days of school, and for the teachers trying to cram in their lessons with an entire week less instruction time than they should have, and for the other District employees that will have to work when it should be "summer," and for the folks everywhere ELSE that didn't get off Scot-free for a solid week...

"Nesting" Projects
This weekend we finally made a "designated space" in our home for Baby Girl! I am very excited about this change. My sister loaned me our family's cradle that she used with her 2 boys --which was also the cradle the 3 kids in my family used when we were babies-- and that has served as our little girl's only space for the last couple of months.
Well, the cradle was getting piled high with hand-me-down baby gear, and our room had become more of a garage/attic/storage area than a bedroom lately. I felt like the walls were closing in on me! This weekend, I decided I just couldn't take it anymore, so Jeremy and I worked together all Sunday afternoon and accomplished so much!! We...
It finally feels like our home is a home again, and I am so glad! I guess that feeling of organization and accomplishment has me raring to go with my other little works-in-progress, because now I want tackle them, as well! We'll call them "nesting" projects since I am VERY motivated to complete them due to the pregnancy. :)

This weekend, I decided I just couldn't take it anymore, so Jeremy and I worked together all Sunday afternoon and accomplished so much!! We...
- Moved box upon box to the "community attic" at our apartment complex
- Donated 4 bags of clothes and household items to Goodwill
- Purged 2 bags of accumulated JUNK
- Cleared out 1/2 of a closet (which is 1/4 of our apartment's TOTAL closet space!)
- Removed the accordion doors from the closet and stored them in the "community attic"
- Turned an unused corner into a hidden storage area
- Decorated for Christmas (then promptly stored extra Christmas items :)
- GAVE BABY GIRL 1/2 OF A CLOSET!!

In no particular order...
- Jeremy's BCD mini-scrapbook
- Address book update and upload to Microsoft for label-printing
- Wedding memory album (It's only been 4 years. :)
- 2 holes to stitch: my cardigan and Jeremy's t-shirt
- Christmas cards
- Screen saver and framed picture update around our place
- Take a few maternity snapshots with Momma (hopefully include in Christmas cards!)
- TRY to make a few casseroles and other meals to freeze for after Baby Girl arrives
- Baby book

Thankful
Today I am thankful...
...that it is Friday!
...for cooler fall weather that necessitates the wearing of a sweater and is [hopefully!] here to stay after what I feared was The Summer That Wouldn't Die.
...that one of my job responsibilities includes chaperoning 22 very excited 5th grade girls to a college campus tomorrow for a way-cool science festival that I am pretty sure they will never forget.
...for my husband, who works diligently every single day in the name of reaching his career goal, which will provide for our family and allow me to be a stay-at-home Mom.
...that I have found so many women in Dallas who have become true friends, confidants and sisters in Christ.
...for the life inside me that is growing (and kicking!) every single day, by God's grace. Baby Girl is miraculous.
And I am thankful.

Sonogram #2: The Big Reveal
I guess I have had enough fun building the anticipation for the last couple of days that it is now time to share our news...
Please meet our beautiful baby GIRL!
(And after all of this drama, that sonogram technician better be RIGHT that she is, indeed, a GIRL!!!)

The "First Crisis of Motherhood"
So, here's the story of how we found out the gender of our baby at 21 weeks when we were TRYING to be surprised in the delivery room.
Jeremy and I decided early in my pregnancy that we wanted to wait to find out our baby's gender at the time of his or her birth. We like surprises, and we thought this would be a really fun adventure for 9 months. It's fun to hear each person's theory about what they think I am having and why, and we would be overjoyed to have a boy or a girl, so why not be surprised?
Well. Yesterday, October 19, was my mid-pregnancy sonogram, and we knew that this would be the sonogram where we would need to be vigilant with reminders to the sonogram technician (etc.) to keep the gender a secret. As we walked down to the sonogram room with the tech, we reminded her of our preference, and she was great about it. We were with her, looking at our precious baby, for a solid half-hour. She took tons of measurements, showed us all the baby's different organs and limbs, and we were amazed at the beauty and miracle of it all. We took our pile of pictures from the sonogram to the doctor's inner waiting room, and sat down to wait to see the nurse and then the doctor.
My doctor had just come back from vacation, and was working in several patients (including us). She was behind schedule, and so we sat...and sat...and sat for an hour! I had forgotten to bring a snack, Jeremy was concerned he would be late to see his 1:00 dental patient, and we were both getting hungry and frustrated. I saw the nurse walk by, and asked her if she knew how much longer it would be. "You're up next!" she replied. A little while later, hungry and annoyed, we followed her into the exam room.
As I took off my shoes to prepare to step on the scale, she greeted us with, "So, you're having a ____!" and blurted out our baby's gender. We were shocked. We stared at her with our mouths open, not knowing what to say. It was obvious to her that this was, in fact, news to us, and she immediately panicked. "Oh my gosh! You weren't finding out, were you?" She fumbled with my file, then said, "Oh, I was just kidding!" But obviously, it was too late to take back her words or play it off in any way.
She then began to apologize profusely, and explained that the sonogram technician was supposed to circle "undetermined at parents' request" on my file with the paperwork following the sonogram, but instead had circled our baby's gender. She continued to say how sorry she was to ruin our surprise and that she had never done that before and felt really badly about it. After she weighed me, took my blood pressure and asked me a few questions, she left the room, again apologizing to us.
Jeremy and I stood alone in the exam room not knowing what to say. It wasn't BAD news to find out the gender, and we had already had GREAT news that day that every single measurement and scan the sonogram technician had done of our baby looked absolutely perfect-- praise God!
Still, it felt to me like someone had opened my Christmas present early and told me what it was, and I was disappointed. I sincerely wanted to be surprised, and I was sad that the surprise was now spoiled. Jeremy had to leave to make it back to school in time to see his patient, so I was left alone in the exam room, processing.
Finally, my doctor came in, also apologizing about what had happened. She discussed all the details of the sonogram, and was very positive and encouraging about the health and development of the baby. She examined my belly and told me it was looking just right for 21 weeks, too. We discussed the usual pregnancy questions and updates, but as she spoke, my mind was somewhere else, very preoccupied.
Later, the sonogram technician came up from downstairs to tell me how sorry she was that she had mistakenly indicated the baby's gender on my file. I told all of them (the nurse included) that it was fine and that I knew it was an honest mistake. I wasn't mad at them or anything, just disappointed and really, REALLY surprised. I guess it's true that "it's a surprise no matter when you find out," because I don't think I have ever been so speechlessly shocked!
As I was finishing up my appointment, my doctor commended me on handling my "first crisis of motherhood" very well. She told me I was being a really good sport and that I was staying calm and being kind to everyone, so that means I am going to be a good Mom. :) I appreciated her encouraging words...but I think I would rather have had the secret KEPT!
Stay tuned...perhaps tomorrow we will tell the rest of the world what we so unexpectedly discovered yesterday: the gender of our Little One!
